2026 is just around the corner, the year I begin my 60th year of life. 60 years! I still cannot wrap my mind around the reality of life’s brevity. As a pastor of a growing church, I have done well over 400 funerals in the last 25 years, I have watched strong robust men be brought to the frailty of broken clay. So, you could say that I am acutely aware that eternity is always lurking around the next corner.
Just last night my son Joseph was reading Ecclesiastes 12:1-2 aloud wondering what it was talking about:
“Remember your Creator
in the days of your youth,
before the days of trouble come
and the years approach when you will say,
“I find no pleasure in them”—
before the sun and the light
and the moon and the stars grow dark,
Remember him—before the silver cord is severed,
and the golden bowl is broken;
before the pitcher is shattered at the spring,
and the wheel broken at the well,
and the dust returns to the ground it came from.”
The principle is clear – we must all be keenly aware of the grace you are living under at the present moment. Praise God for it before your earthly opportunity runs out of time. Because it really is, you can’t escape death.
So as I contemplate the sinking sands of time, I felt compelled to not let this season of personal lucidity pass me by without thanking God and teaching younger generations about his grace. I refuse to consider myself an old man, but in my sixty years, I have seen my fair share of sunrises and sunsets. So, I said to myself, “Okay, you greychinned coffin-dodger, it’s time to write!”
So here we go. I am going to call this new endeavor “Series 60.” This will be a new on-line project where I will try to accomplish three things:
- Leave a footprint of doctrinal insights that have helped me understand this puzzle called “life” through the years. Included will be biblical teachings mixed with philosophical implications. I will constantly ask the question, “If this principle of scripture is truly true, what does God want me to do?”
- I am going to strive to have at least two articles come out weekly: Mon-Weds I will evaluate current books and ideas that are impacting my thinking. Thurs-Sat I will discuss some of the deeper study insights as I prepare for preaching on Sunday.
- I am going to use a guideline I read about in the book “Biblical Critical Theory’ that makes this statement in its introduction: “There is really no reason for me to get out the guns on the evidence for the resurrection, which is trying to show that Christianity is true, if they don’t want it to be true. But if I get them to want it, if they get to the place of saying, ‘Gee, wouldn’t it be great if that was true, but is it?’ then I can do my apologetics.”
I want my readers to want God’s truth to be great. Because, the promises of God are great, and everyone is “Yes” in Christ! Gospel does mean “Good News” after all. So I invite you to join me, especially those of you who have grown weary of life and have struggled with making sense of God’s word. I am hoping those people I know and love can know and love the person of God more through these “Series 60” writings.
I was talking to someone the other day about turning 60, and he asked me if it is any different than living life in your 50’s? My response was simple, “It is not that life is different, it is more about being confident about those things I know to be true.” By the age of 60 you have seen the same consequences happen over and over again in people’s lives when they chose to ignore the truth. And conversely, the same degree of blessing occurs in the lives of people who walk by faith in God’s promises.
The universal Biblical truth never fails, “There really is nothing new under the sun.” So join me, as Jeremiah says, “Ask for the ancient paths” and walk them with me as I begin “Series 60.” I am hoping you make it a regular part of your spiritual diet!
So looking forward to reading your mussings! 60 hit me hard, NO WAY 60??, but 66 sent me over the edge! What have I done to further the kingdom…. not enough. Time to buckle down! After all, I am old now, I can speak my mind lol
Looking forward to journeying with you sir!
Thank you Chris this is exactly what I need for the upcoming years even though I am almost 8 years ahead of you. I remember when I had my 60th birthday thinking this is it I am officially old. However it is just the beginning of a new part of life and will be great, no matter what, as long as we stay in Christ.
